About Copenhagen Carnival
Focus
Copenhagen Carnival is a world carnival that celebrates the world’s many folk cultures with a focus on folk music and folk dance.
With more than 500 artists, 30 free concerts and dance shows, and the traditional Copenhagen Carnival Parade, an audience of more than 10.000 people are presented with folk genres such as samba from Brazil, Tango from Argentina, Folklore ballet from Mexico, Salsa from Cuba, and many more.
Copenhagen Carnival is Denmark’s oldest carnival dating back to 1982 and represents cultures from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Cuba, Bolivia, Peru, Trinidad, Tobago, China and many more.
Organisation
Copenhagen Carnival is a nonprofit organisation with over 500 artists and volunteers who perform and work for free to keep Copenhagen Carnival a yearly tradition.
The event
Copenhagen Carnival takes place in the second weekend of June over three days in three different neighborhoods in Copenhagen – each day with its own theme and audience.
Friday
Friday’s theme is “Carnival Bloco” which is a Rio Carnival term for a massive moving street party led by a live orchestra.
It is a magic evening in the sunset along the lakes of Nørrebro in the heart of Copenhagen with live samba jam from a massive group of samba musicians and dancers and a dancing crowd.
Saturday
Saturday’s theme is “A love explosion of world folk music and dance”, and is a beautiful bomb of music, dance, color, skin, summer, sun, noise, glitter, and love for the world’s fantastic folk cultures.
This day is LOUD!
With over 500 artists from more than 15 countries that participate in the traditional carnival parade through the main shopping street in the city center, and perform with free concerts and dance shows on the main town hall square.
Sunday
Sunday’s theme is “Family-friendly world folk music and dance in the park” with a child-friendly and relaxed vibe in the wonderful park, Enghaveparken, with free concerts and dance shows all day.
